NEED ASSESMENT
The World Health Organization:
There are more than 2.3 million cases of breast cancer that occur each year, which make it the most common cancer among adults. In 95% of countries, breast cancer is the first or second leading cause of female cancer deaths.
The American Cancer Society:
In the US in 2022, an estimated 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and 43,250 women will die from the disease. In addition, an estimated 51,400 cases of DCIS will be diagnosed among women. Although breast cancer is predominantly a female disease, approximately 2,710 new cases and 530 deaths (about 1% of all breast cancer cases and deaths) will occur among men.
Breast Cancer in PUERTO RICO
Puerto Rico Health Department Cancer Registry:
In Puerto Rico, during the period 2014-2018, breast cancer accounted for 28.9% of all cancer cases in women and 18.9% of all cancer deaths in women.
On average, 2,242 women were diagnosed annually with invasive breast cancer.
On average, 437 women died each year from breast cancer.
1 in 9 women born today in Puerto Rico could be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.
For cases diagnosed between 2010 and 2014, the relative 5-year survival of breast cancer in women was 86.2%.
